Help Finding A Stolen Macbook Pro, I Have A Lot Of Information That Could Help?
Here is the situation. I got my mac stolen from my apartment on friday somewhere between 12pm and 2pm. I found the location of it through “find my mac”, however it is not a pin point location. I know that the computer is located in my apartment building.
Right when it was stolen i remotely locked my computer so the user cannot access anything. This was both good and bad, the good being that they cannot wipe the system, however the bad being that the only way that can connect to the internet is if they connect to a known network.
I have set it on find my mac so that when the computer connects to the internet i will receive and email. The computer connected to the internet yesterday at two specific times which i have recorded and is in the same location as before. I have been working with police and the internet company (that manages my whole apartment building) to locate my computer.
I am trying to cross reference the MAC address from my computer with the room # of the internet that the computer connects to. However, the internet company is having trouble searching for the computer that way because the MAC address is under my internet account. However if i remove the computer from my internet account the user would register undre than MAC address and i would get its location. The problem with that is, is because it is locked they cannot enter any information to register the computer, so there for i am not removing my MAC address from my internet account.
I obtained the IP address that the computer was connected to at some point today. The internet technician noted that my computer was connected to switch 11 and port E33. I walked around the apartment complex while on the phone with the internet technician trying to locate the point where switch 11 and port E33 exists. I believe that we figured out that switch 11 is on the 4th floor, but because of the wireless nature, it is difficult to pin point the exact location because my computer may be picking up a wireless signal from a different location that its closest wireless signal.
I checked the security cameras in my building and still nothing. I did not have any anti theft software on my computer so as of now that is no use.
Is there anything else i can do? Maybe with the IP address or MAC address? Problem with the IP address is that it is dynamic not static so its always changing. The internet technician is trying to cross reference the times that the computer connected on Sunday with records of computers connecting to my apartment buildings internet to see if the MAC addresses match. Any one else know of something i can do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m in the process of obtaining my serial number to give to authorities in case it is tried to be sold on eBay or at a pawn shop.
